Belief Statements
for Art Education
It is the responsibility of the visual arts program to:
1. Expose all students to the experience of art and to develop an appreciation of the arts.
2. Provide a safe environment for the freedom of inquiry and creative personal expression.
3. Provide an understanding of the human experience, through the diverse cultural and historical heritages of the world as reflected through art.
4. Promote a visual/non-verbal form of communication for ideas and emotions.
5. Build essential artistic competencies by developing physical and technical skills and the ability to work with a variety of mediums.
6. Build transferrable life skills, such as problem solving skills, time management skills, and attitudes.
7. Understand that art has many values and is significant in daily life.
8. Develop individuals who can make educated aesthetic judgments as audiences, producers, and consumers of art.
9. Integrate art into other facets of their current and future lives through vocational and/or leisure pursuits in a changing world.
